Governance Foundations
STATUS
Completed March 2026
Project Overview
The Council of the Haida Nation (CHN) developed a data management policy and related procedures to support organization-wide data management.
The project is helping create more secure and consistent practices for how data are stored, accessed, used, and archived across departments.
The project included hiring a data manager, training staff, and developing Standard Operating Guidelines (SOGs) to securely manage and archive critical data. It also included onboarding and offboarding procedures to support implementation in day-to-day practice.
“The data management needs were greater than what was originally identified... so the project grew, but for the benefit of the Nation.”
— Project Lead
Case Study Highlights
The CHN now has organization-wide policy and procedural infrastructure to support data management across the Nation.
The project developed a Data Archive Policy, fourteen SOGs, and onboarding and offboarding procedures.
The work put dedicated internal capacity in place through roles focused on policy development, training, change management, and implementation.
The project helped create more secure and consistent practices for how data are stored, accessed, used, and archived across departments.
Better data management practices strengthened CHN’s ability to operate in real time, using information when it was needed rather than fighting delays and uncertainty to find and interpret it.
“This project is so exciting because it’s creating a framework that empowers staff to be responsible data stewards.”
