Nation-Led Data Collection

Hear Directly
from Your Citizens

Strong governance depends on understanding the priorities, experiences, and needs of citizens. Yet collecting reliable information at the Nation level has often been costly, time-consuming, and dependent on external researchers or institutions.

The Build Your Own Data Centre (BYODC) changes this dynamic by providing First Nations governments with tools to design and conduct their own surveys and community census projects.

By making data collection tools accessible within a secure, Nation-controlled platform, the BYODC allows Nations to gather high-quality information quickly and at significantly lower cost. It also ensures that community data remain in Nation hands and can be used to inform governance, planning, and advocacy.

When multiple Nations choose to use shared survey frameworks, the platform can also support comparable data across communities — creating opportunities for larger regional or national studies while maintaining full control over participation and data governance.

What Partner Nations Say

“Our reach… was something that we feel proud about—we have a good representation of our people.”

—Project Lead, Tla’amin First Nation

Designed for Community Surveys and Census Projects

The BYODC provides practical tools for designing, administering, and analyzing surveys that support Nation-led planning and decision-making.

Survey and Questionnaire Design

Select from and adapt evidence-based surveys and questionnaires tailored to your Nation’s priorities. Templates tested through Nation-led projects reduce the time required to launch surveys and make it easier to build on approaches that have already worked in other communities.

Surveys can support community census projects, planning initiatives, service reviews, or program feedback. Questionnaires can be adapted to reflect the priorities, language, and governance context of each Nation.

Real-Time Participation Tracking

Staff can monitor response rates as surveys are completed and track participation in real time.

The platform provides visibility into completion rates, partial responses, and overall participation trends. This makes it easier to follow up with households or groups that have not yet responded and helps ensure strong participation across the community.

Flexible Membership-Based Distribution

The platform allows Nations to define their own survey samples using built-in sampling tools. Staff can invite the entire membership or target specific groups — for example by age, location, household, or program participation — depending on the purpose of the survey.

Once a sample is created, surveys can be shared through multiple channels, including QR codes, short links, or direct invitations. This flexibility makes it possible to conduct both full community surveys and targeted data collection initiatives.

Privacy Protections

Protecting personal privacy is a core feature of the platform.

Survey results are automatically processed to protect sensitive information through built-in privacy safeguards. Personal identifiers can be masked, and results that could reveal individual identities are suppressed.

These protections help ensure that community data can be analyzed and shared responsibly while maintaining confidentiality and respecting the privacy of citizens.

Built-In Analysis and Visualization

The BYODC includes built-in analytical tools that allow staff to work with survey results without requiring specialized technical expertise.

Users can explore results through curated charts and summaries, run cross-tabulations to examine patterns across different groups, and build interactive dashboards that make findings easier to interpret and share. Results can also be exported directly into presentation-ready formats, making it easier to communicate insights to leadership, staff, or community members.

These tools are designed to make meaningful analysis accessible to everyday users, allowing Nations to work with their data confidently without needing advanced statistical or technical skills.
